GMDSS Simulator

GMDSS Simulator trains mariners working in Sea Areas A1 – A4 for the General Operators Certificate and the Restricted Operators Certificate. It complies with the international requirements of INMARSAT, the IMO and the ITU.

Trainees will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in:

the basic concepts of GMDSS
the principles of GMDSS radio communication & alerting systems
the uses of Maritime Mobile & Maritime Mobile-Satellite services
use of GMDSS radio equipment & documents for emergency procedures, Maritime Safety Information & general communications
actions in the event of false distress alert transmission

The Simulator provides documentation on GMDSS theory based on the IMO GMDSS Handbook, software models of typical ship’s GMDSS radio equipment (based on Skanti-1000 series) and an assessment program to test student knowledge.
It comprises Instructor station used as a server for up to 8 student stations in a local network; if more student stations are required, another Instructor station is supplied. Student stations can be provided with a hardware console modelling the radio equipment.

The radio console imitates the following equipment:

VHF radio station with DSC controller VHF-1000
MF/HF transceiver with DSC controller TRP-1000
INMARSAT-C TT-3020

These actions can be carried out on the GMDSS Simulator:

DSC calls between workstations in automatic and semi-automatic (with participation of instructor) modes
Conducting RT and NBDP traffic between workstations; imitation of MSI promulgation via SafetyNET, NAVTEX & on HF NBDP
GMDSS operation from main & reserve batteries
Setting ships positions, selecting coast stations and displaying on charts; managing equipment status (working/broken down) on the trainee’s station
Creating scripts on Instructor station with ships position, equipment set-up and typical tasks
Transfer of tasks or scripts to trainee stations, with an opportunity of repeated viewing of text messages
Instructor monitoring of trainee dialogues
